What Is VAT?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax applied to sales of goods and services. The seller collects VAT on the price of the product sold and pays it to the state. In e-commerce, prices are usually shown to the end consumer VAT included; on the invoice, VAT appears as a separate line.
How Is VAT Calculated?
The calculation runs in two directions:
- Adding VAT to a net amount:
VAT = Amount × Rate / 100, Gross = Net + VAT. At 20%, for example: 100 TL → 20 TL VAT → 120 TL gross. - Extracting VAT from a gross amount:
VAT = Gross × Rate / (100 + Rate). At 20%, for example: 120 TL → 20 TL VAT → 100 TL net.
